Mount Constitution:
Elevation: 1500'
Distance: 7.2 miles
Six of us went to the San Juan Islands over Labor Day Weekend for my birthday. It is quite the haul to get to the San Juan Islands from Portland. The first part of the leg is driving over 4 hours to Anacortes. From there, you take a ferry for an hour to the islands. We camped on Orcas Island all three nights. The island is shaped like a horseshoe and is pretty small. We had intermittent rain throughout the weekend. Luckily, we had a sunny day when we hiked Mount Constitution: the highest point on the island. So the thing with Orcas Island is that it is small. So the hikes are pretty short. And there isn't a whole lot of other stuff to do. We spent a lot of time at the campground for the weekend. Aaron and I did venture on a whale watching tour. It was the highlight of the weekend, I would say. Overall, I think the islands are worth visiting. I don't think I did it the best way for the 3 day weekend. Whale watching is a must. I think I would have enjoyed taking ferries to the other islands.

I moved to the Pacific Northwest in August of 2012. I quickly identified myself as a hiker. I want to document my experiences so that I can refer to them for myself and others to provide the best hiking experience. I also hope to learn more about hiking from others comments and recommendations. Archives
